So AO3 (apparently) got scraped for content for another AI model again, and that means a lot of people are suggesting that you should archive lock your fics so that they can’t scrape your writing.
I’m not going to do that.
I’m not going to suggest that.
Do I like the corporations are using fanfiction for AI models? Absolutely not.
But you can’t steal work that’s already freely given.
When I post my fanfiction to AO3 I’m sharing it for free to anyone who wants to read it, and archive locking it puts another barrier between my writing and someone who might want to read it.
Some snippets of work I wrote might someday end up in some AI generated text some day. Okay. So what? How does that meaningfully impact me? How does that harm me? How does that take away from my work?
If you want to lock your work that’s great, but I’m not hoarding my fanfiction away from others.
I don’t write for profit and I’m not competing with AI.
My fanfiction will always be shared freely.
